How to Measure for Pile Caps

Properly measuring your wooden pilings ensures you get the right cap the first time. Even if all pilings were installed together, individual measurements may vary by 2–3 inches.

✅ Most Accurate Method: Use a String

1. Wrap a piece of string around the circumference of the piling

2. Measure the length of the string in inches

3. Divide that number by π (3.1416) to calculate the diameter

   • Example: 25" string ÷ 3.1416 = 7.96 → Order an 8" cap

4. You can also use a free online circumference calculator

🔎 Less Accurate Method:

If string isn’t available, measure across the piling both North/South and East/West, then average the two. Round up to the nearest half inch.
