Safety and Compliance at a Glance
Navigation arcs. Running lights must show specific colors and angles so other vessels can read your course. Sidelights show red to port and green to starboard. Stern lights show white aft. An all-round white light covers 360 degrees when anchored.
Visibility distances. Many fixtures must be visible from set distances. Match the fixture rating to your vessel size and use.
Mounting height and clear lines of sight. Keep navigation lights unobstructed. Mount anchor and all-round lights high and clear.
Electrical protection. Use circuit protection sized to the load. Add GFCI on shore power. Protect penetrations and junctions from water.

LED Fundamentals in Plain Language
Lumens. The total amount of light. Useful for area lighting and interior downlights.
Candela. How intense the beam is in a specific direction. Critical for search and spot work.
Beam angle and distribution. Tells you where the light goes. Flood for working decks. Spot for long reach.
Color temperature. Measured in Kelvin. Warm white around 2700 to 3000 K feels relaxed. Cool white around 5000 to 6000 K looks crisp.
CRI. Color Rendering Index. Higher numbers show colors more accurately. Aim for 90+ inside cabins and salons.
Efficacy. Lumens per watt. Higher means more light for less power.
Thermal design. LEDs last when they run cool. Housings act like heatsinks. Good contact and airflow prevent early failure.
Power, Wiring, and Control
DC systems. Most boats run 12 or 24 volt DC. Size wire to keep voltage drop low on long runs. Use tinned copper marine cable.
AC systems. Docks and marinas often use 120 volt AC for area and piling lights. Add GFCI and weather-rated boxes.
Drivers and power supplies. Some LEDs need a constant current driver. Others use constant voltage. Match the driver to the fixture.
Dimming. Many systems dim with PWM or driver control. Keep total load within the device rating.
Automation. Photocells switch at dusk and dawn. Timers set hours. Controllers group zones and scenes.
