Application Instructions

Marine Formula™ is a solvent-based de-bonder built specifically for breaking down polyurethane adhesives and sealants like 3M 5200. To use it, spray it directly onto the area where the adhesive or sealant is applied, making sure full coverage on the bonded surface. Let the product sit and soak in; the longer the contact time, the more the adhesive's molecular structure breaks down, which makes separation much easier.

For smaller jobs like removing a cleat, hinge, or engine bracket, expect the process to take anywhere from 2 to 30 minutes depending on how much adhesive was originally used. Larger projects, like removing a full hardware mount or a wider sealant bead, will take longer and often need a second or third application to fully loosen the bond.

A few things that affect how well and how fast it works:

• Temperature matters. Marine Formula performs best in warmer conditions, ideally above 70°F. Cold weather slows the chemical reaction down significantly.
• Apply in the shade whenever possible. Direct sunlight causes the solvents to evaporate faster than intended, which reduces the product's effective working time before it can fully penetrate the bond.
• It also works as a cleanup solvent. While applying new adhesive or sealant, keep a small amount on hand and use it with a clean rag to wipe away excess squeeze-out or spills before they cure.

Product Limitations

Marine Formula is a strong solvent, so it comes with a few important limits to keep in mind before using it:

• Never use it on plastic surfaces. Plastic is built from long molecular chains that are chemically similar to the polyurethane adhesives this product targets. That means it will break down plastic the same way it breaks down adhesive, so keep it strictly on the intended bonded surface.
• Control where it spreads. If it drips onto an area you didn't intend to treat, it will start de-bonding any polyurethane it comes into contact with. If that happens, denatured alcohol or plain soap and water will stop the chemical reaction before it causes further damage.
• Keep clean rags nearby during use. Since the product spreads easily once applied, having rags on hand lets you control runoff and clean up quickly.

Marine Formula is a solvent-based aerosol product, so standard chemical handling precautions apply:

• Use it in a well-ventilated area. Avoid enclosed or poorly ventilated spaces, especially inside tight engine compartments.
• Wear gloves and eye protection while applying it, since prolonged skin or eye contact with the solvent can cause irritation.
• Keep it away from open flames, sparks, and other heat sources, as is standard for aerosol solvent products.

Does Marine Formula work on old or fully cured sealant, or only fresh applications?
It works on both. Unlike many competing removers that only handle fresh adhesive, Marine Formula is specifically formulated to break down 5200 and similar polyurethane sealants even after they've fully cured.

Can I use this on plastic parts or fittings?
No. Plastic shares a similar molecular structure to polyurethane adhesive, so the solvent will damage plastic surfaces the same way it removes adhesive. Stick to fiberglass, gelcoat, and metal surfaces only.

How long should I expect it to take?
